An 18-year-old Oak Harbor woman is accused of stabbing her boyfriend during an argument in which she threatened to light his boxer shorts on fire, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Irene Burleson in Island County Superior Court July 31 with assault in the second degree with a deadly weapon. If convicted, she could face from three to nine months in jail under the standard sentencing range.

On July 28, Oak Harbor police officers responded to a report that a man had been stabbed in the chest at an apartment on NE Seventh Avenue. Officers found a 19-year-old Sanford Swayzer with a knife wound in his chest.

According to the report by Oak Harbor Police Detective Carl Seim, Burleson initially told officers that she had been holding the knife and Swayzer walked into it.

Later, in a recorded interview, she said she stabbed Swayzer with a seven-inch knife she grabbed from a kitchen drawer, Seim wrote. She said they were arguing and she threatened to light his boxer shorts on fire. Swayzer stopped her by grabbing her neck, the report states, so she ran inside. She grabbed a knife from a drawer and stabbed him, Seim wrote.

Swayzer was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. He lost three liters of blood, Seim wrote, and surgeons had to put a stint in an artery to stop the bleeding.
