Oak Harbor flexed its muscle in the first Western Conference North A Division golf meet of the season Thursday, shooting a combined 404 at Whidbey Golf and Country Club.
Arlington (412), Mount Vernon (425) and Stanwood (463) rounded out the field.
Wildcat junior Matt Holmly led the way for OHHS and all other teams, shooting a four over par, 76, while earning medalist honors. He had 16 pars and if it wasn’t for a triple bogey on hole number 14 would have had a substantially lower score.
“That was a pretty consistent day for Matt,†OHHS head coach John Matzen said.
Number two golfer Josh Whitley also shot under 80, scoring a 79. There was only one other player of 24 varsity competitors who finished under 80.
“Josh is just a ninth grader,†Matzen said. “He’s feeling his way through the experience of varsity golf right now.â€
Rounding out the Wildcat roster was Robert Tercero (82), Wes Loveng (83), AJ Davis (84) and John Ahn (84).
Overall Matzen was pleased with the performances, but he would like to see the team get in the 390s before the season is over.
The task won’t be easy as Oak Harbor has no more home matches this season.
The Wildcats have their next competition Monday, April 25 in Mount Vernon at Eaglemont Golf Course. They then travel to Stanwood on Thursday, April 28 to play on Kayak Point Golf Course.
“Both courses create a bit of a physical challenge,†Matzen said. “They’re both very hilly — you have to be in good shape.â€
