An 18-year-old Oak Harbor man is going to prison for chasing down and beating up his own brother with a group of friends.

Shaun Jackson pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court April 7 to assault in the second degree as part of a plea bargain.

Judge Alan Hancock agreed with the joint sentencing recommendation from the prosecution and defense. He sentenced Jackson to 13 months in prison.

Jackson was one of four Oak Harbor residents who were charged in connection with the Feb. 7 assault. Prosecutors also charged 19-year-old Korey Jensen, 22-year-old Krystal Richardson and 22-year-old Jessica Reed with assault in the second degree.

Oak Harbor Police Officer Patrick Horn wrote in his report on the incident that the victim said he contacted Richardson and asked her to buy beer for him. On the way to the store, she dropped him off on NE Ellis Way, where “four dark figures emerged from the trail,” Horn wrote.

The man said that the four people — his brother Shaun Jackson and his brother’s friends — chased him. Shaun Jackson was carrying a large stick and threw it at the victim, knocking him down.

Horn wrote that the assailants punched and kicked him as he curled into a fetal position.

The victim suffered scrapes and bruises on his face and upper body. He was treated at Whidbey General Hospital for a painful, swollen jaw, but X-rays showed it wasn’t broken, the report states.

Jackson’s criminal history includes juvenile convictions for third-degree assault, first-degree theft and second-degree robbery.
