Find your next star employee or a new job at the WorkSource Whidbey Job Fair Thursday, May 22, from noon to 4 p.m. at The Elks Lodge, 155 NE Ernst Ave., Oak Harbor.
Over 35 employers are expected to participate. Janicki Industries is sponsoring the Job Fair, which includes employers such as Boeing, Schwan’s, New Leaf, Whatcom County Corrections and Aviation Technical Services. Employers will have the opportunity to meet applicants, hand out applications or interview on-site. Over 270 job seekers attended the last job fair. Participation is free.

Travel mag features Whidbey
Nationally distributed American Road magazine is currently spotlighting Whidbey Island in its spring fifth anniversary issue. On national newsstands through May, the Whidbey Island feature includes five illustration-packed pages on the historic allure of Fort Casey, Oak Harbor, Coupeville, Langley and more.
American Road is an award-winning, full color, 68-page periodical published quarterly by Mock Turtle Press. It highlights the joys and adventures of traveling America’s back roads.

Tour company promotes Goff
Deception Pass Tours has promoted Cameron Goff to the position of operations manager. Goff has been with the company since its inception, serving as naturalist aboard the hourly tours of Deception Pass Bridge and surrounding area.
“We believe that it is the right time for Cameron to take on a leadership role in our company,” said Brett Ginther, owner, in a news release. “Cameron has been a crowd favorite from the very beginning, and knows how important it is that every detail is right. We know he is ready for this position.”
In Goff’s new role, he will be responsible for keeping an eye on customer service to ensure that every guest feels that they have received excellent value, and is eager to both recommend the tour to others and continue to support Deception Pass Tours themselves.
“Our basic principle for customer service is to treat all of our customers as individuals. We respect their expectation to be entertained and treated great,” said. Goff. “This may be the big summer vacation for our customers, and it’s my job to make sure everyone on our team keeps that in mind.”
Gelato Convention attracts Whelans
Karen and Paul Whelan, owners of Kapaw’s Iskreme in Coupeville, recently attended the 2008 International Gelato Convention in Rimini, Italy. While there they attended workshops, demonstrations, and met with ice cream product suppliers from throughout Italy. They also attended the Gelato World Cup which features teams from eight countries, including the U.S., competing for the title, “World’s Best Gelato.”
Kapaw’s Iskreme is an old-fashioned ice cream parlor located on historic Front Street in Coupeville featuring hand dipped ice cream and homemade waffle cones. Hours are 11:30 to 5:30 daily.
Housing for mentally ill
Compass Health announces that it is building the Milwaukee Park Apartments project, which will contain 15 units of permanent rental housing for homeless disabled persons with chronic mental illness, in Mount Vernon. Approximately 2,000 square feet of the building will be used for mental health treatment and support services. The addition of the Milwaukee Park Apartments brings to 23 total number of properties owned or managed by Compass Health Housing, which provides safe and affordable housing to 230 adults throughout Skagit, Island, and Snohomish Counties.
Compass Health held a ground breaking recently on its Milwaukee Park Apartments project located at 209 S. Milwaukee Street, Mount Vernon. Approximately 35 individual enjoyed a reception immediately following the ceremony and viewed detailed drawings of the new building.

A free first-time home buyer class will be held Wednesday, April 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Skagit Valley College, Whidbey Campus, Hayes Hall Room 137.
Military and other first-time home buyers are encouraged to attend prior to begining their home search. This class will teach you how to make home ownership and intricate part of a wealth building strategy, how to find the best loan programs, what to expect from a home inspector, and how to save money on insuring your investment. Students learn, earn at hospital
The Student Intern Program at Whidbey General Hospital will once again be available to students who 18 years or older as of June 16, 2008.
This program is designed for students of good standing with an interest in health care careers. Selected students will be interviewed and, if successful, hired to work at the hospital in the department which best matches their career interest.
From June 16 until Aug. 9, they will have the opportunity to work with the professionals they hope to become as well as to contribute to the work of their departments In past years, students have worked in the Medical Ambulatory Care center, Rehabilitation Services, Diagnostic Imaging, the Lab, Critical Care Unit, Care Management/Social Services, the Whidbey Family Birthplace, Nutrition and Dietary, and the Medical-Surgical Unit.
