Che’ Gilliland Nature Trail dedication, 2:30 p.m., Friday, April 22 at Olympic View Elementary School, Oak Harbor. Trail will be dedicated in memory of the elementary school’s former teacher and peace and environmental activist who lost her brief fight with cancer in late January. A plaque will be unveiled and cedar tree planted in her honor near the woods by the school playground. Children will then pick up trash, one of the activities Gilliland did with her kids at the school.
SATURDAY, APRIL 23
State park cleanup, 9 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Joseph Whidbey State Park. Staff and students from Hillcrest Elementary School are tackling a spring cleanup at Joseph Whidbey, the school’s adopted park. It’s one of a number of Earth Day projects in which Hillcrest students are involved.
Tree planting, 9 a.m., Saturday, Atlas Street (near Home Depot), Oak Harbor. City of Oak Harbor planting 10 Garry oak saplings in celebration of Arbor Day and Earth Day. Volunteers may join effort onsite.
Volunteer Work Party, BBQ, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, Bowman Bay, Deception Pass State Park. Volunteer planting party hosted by Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group in partnership with Northwest Straits Initiative, Skagit Marine Resources Committee, Deception Pass Foundation and the Samish Tribe. Activities include planting native trees and shrubs and education about native plants, shoreline health and marine life. Raffle prizes and free salmon burger barbecue picnic for the entire family.
