“The September primary will feature a long list of people seeking statewide office, but for local elections the competition will be slight.In the 10th Legislative District, which includes all of Island County, the only primary battle will be for Position 1 in the State House of Representatives. Republicans Barry Sehlin of Oak Harbor and Hugh Fleet of Marysville will go head-to-head in the primary to see who meets incumbent Democrat Dave Anderson in the general election.Friday was the filing deadline for elective office. In the other 10th District positions there are no intraparty squabbles. For Senate, Mary Margaret Haugen has no Democrat challenger, and Norma Smith is unopposed on the Republican side. State Rep. Kelly Barlean, R-Langley, has a free ride until November, when he will face John McCoy, D-Tulalip.Friday’s fillings did produce a challenger for two-term Island County Commissioner Mike Shelton, R-Langley. His announced Democrat challenger, Tom Fisher of Clinton, dropped out early this week after announcing he had prostate cancer. But another Democrat, William Rowlands of Clinton, filed Friday. Rowlands has been critical of Shelton’s position on reopening Glendale Road to two-way traffic.For County Commissioner District 2, incumbent Mac McDowell of Oak Harbor will face a primary challenger from fellow Republican Marvin Koorne. Lynne Wilcox was the only Democrat to file for the position.Here is the list of those who filed for offices in the 10th Legislative District, which includes Whidbey Island.
