CAPF offering a shot at a million dollars

Four lucky golfers will shoot for big prize at benefit tourney

How would you like a chance to win one million dollars playing golf? How about benefiting a worthy cause while you are doing it?

If that sounds good, you could get a have a shot if you play in the upcoming Child Abuse Prevention Foundation (CAPF) Tournament to Benefit Children to be held at the Whidbey Golf & Country Club on Friday, July 12.

Four golfers will be selected by a random drawing to have a shot at the millions dollar prize. If any one of them can score a hole-in-one on hole No. 17 at Whidbey G&CC they would be the big winner. The million dollar shot will be held after the conclusion of the tournament.

The million dollar bonus is the largest prize offered at a golf tourney on Whidbey Island. CAPF is able to offer that tantalizing reward because of an insurance company that specializes in events like this.

“We are able to offer $1 million dollars through an arrangement with specialized golf tournament insurance,” explained CAPF’s Development Director Diane Garrod. “This year we hope to be able to award the million dollars at the tournament.”

The insurance company pays $1 million dollars for a special hole-in-one contest held after the regular tournament. In order to verify the shot it will be video-taped and witnessed by the club pro golfer. Last year four golfers had a chance at the million dollars but their shots all fell short.

The million dollars might be the top prize available at the tournament, but that isn’t the only one that will be up for grabs. There are many other chances to win during the tournaments, including a chance for each golfer to take home a brand-new S.U.V. for a hole-in-one during tournament play. That shot will also be on hole No. 17.

The winning teams in various divisions will split $2,500 in prizes and there will also be prizes for closest to the pin and for longest drive. Golfers will also have the opportunity to compete in pre-game contests such as putting and chipping for additional prizes and cash.

The tournament is the primary fund raising event for the local CAPF chapter and this is the third year that it will be offered both in Oak Harbor and at Useless Bay Country Club in Langley. That tournament at Useless Bay will be held on Sept. 14.

“It was very successful last year,” said CAPF executive director Robin Hertlein. “The funds we raised provided a good portion of our operations for the year.”

All funds raised by participants and sponsors benefit children’s programs on Whidbey Island such as the Harbor Haven Crisis & Respite Nursery in Oak Harbor. Other benefits include parenting education and providing birthday presents to foster children on the island.

The Tournament price of $99 includes a full hot lunch, contests and entertainment, tournament with guaranteed prizes, multiple chances for hole-in-one prizes, and a gourmet dinner banquet.

To register for either tournament or for more information, contact CAPF at 331-7343, toll-free (877) 331-7343, or through e-mail at child@whidbey.com.

“It’s a fun day, not too serious, you don’t have to be a professional golfer to play,” Hertlein said. “We have lots of different prizes and everybody can come out and have a fun time.”
