The hard-luck Wildcat girls’ soccer team suffered heart-breaking 1-0 overtime loss at Arlington Saturday.

With just three seconds left in the second overtime, the Eagles kicked toward the Oak Harbor goal from 45 yards out and the ball deflected off a defender at the top of the penalty box and into the upper corner of the goal.

About 90 seconds before the game’s only goal, the Wildcats nearly won the contest when Brighton Pruss, under heavy pressure, received a pin-point pass from Ashley Everett and took a solid shot that was denied by the Eagle goalie with what OHHS coach Jeff Laiblin called “the save of the game.”

Laiblin called his squad’s effort the best of the year. He added, “The team did what every coach hopes for, executed the game plan and gave it everything they had.”

Laiblin said all 18 of his players contributed positively in the game, and lauded the efforts of defenders JJ Nethai, Clarissa Abadesco, and Morgan Murphy, and the efforts of Erin Neilon, Katie and McKenzie Schneider, and Millie Goebel in the center midfield.

Arlington is now 3-8, and Oak Harbor 0-11. The Wildcats play Stanwood here Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
