Living so close they often see each other at different events, but seldom do they ever get to compete against one another.

Both 4A Oak Harbor and 1A Coupeville got that opportunity on Thursday afternoon when they took part in a three way meet along with Friday Harbor.

“The kids all know each other,” Oak Harbor head coach Seth Hodges said. “Many of them have played youth sports together and attend the same churches and our kids looked forward to seeing them at our meet.”

With Oak Harbor expected to dominate the meet due to team depth, the focus of the non-league meet was more to get all the teams attending warmed up for their league championships rather than actual competition between the schools.

“Our best athletes don’t always get true competition that pushes them, so it’s nice to go up against a big school like Oak Harbor,” Coupeville coach Greg Oldham said.

Oak Harbor did end up dominating the meet in points, with the boys scoring a combined 115 and the girls scoring 89. The Friday Harbor boys and girls came in second scoring 39 and 31 points respectively, while the Coupeville boys had seven and the girls scored 26.

On the Oak Harbor side, the boys continued to show improvement as they move on to their league meet Wednesday, May 14.

“Our top boys keep doing what they’ve done all season,” Hodges said.

Matt Constantino captured another double win and set a new personal best in the discus with a toss of 147-feet-nine inches. Senior Tim Boyles had personal records in both hurdle races and the 200-meters. Motrayl Hayes continued to show domination in the triple jump going 43 feet, he tied his personal best in the 200-meters and made up close to 20-meters on the 4 by 100-meter relay team to catch Friday Harbor and take first place. Chris Wichers also had a multiple first place finish day in the 800-meters and the 1600-meters.

The Wildcat girls also continue to show improvement as the season winds down. Nikki Barone and Holly Soyke each set personal bests in the discus as they went first and second respectively. Tina Nicolas had multiple first place finishes for the Cats in the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meters as well as La Paris Rush, who took first in the 100-meters and the long jump. Brittany Warner tied Rush for first place in the 100-meters.

The Coupeville girls had two girls take first place finishes on the day. Brianne King came across the line first in the 1600-meters with a time of 5:54 and Amy Mouw took first in the 800-meters at 2:29.4. Mouw currently has the fastest time in the Northwest A conference.

The highest placer for the Coupeville boys was Brandon Mazdra, who took second in the high jump at five-feet-seven-inches. Mazdra, who suffered early season injuries, has gotten stronger as the season progresses.

Coupeville begins their league championships at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 13 at Burlington-Edison High School, while Oak Harbor heads to Stanwood, Wednesday, May 14 and Friday, May 16 for the WesCo North championships.
