The Oak Harbor High School football team scored 42 points in the first quarter then backed off the gas in a 56-13 ride over host Stanwood Friday, Oct. 17.
The Wildcats (4-0, 5-1) will now face Marysville-Pilchuck (4-0, 6-1) for the divisional title at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.
This is the third year in a row Oak Harbor and M-P have met in the final conference game with the divisional championship on the line. The Tomahawks won the first two.
The Oak Harbor-Stanwood game was close for about six minutes.
Stanwood punted into a stiff wind on the game’s first possession and Oak Harbor took over in Spartan territory.
Two plays later, Princeton Lollar rammed through Stanwood for a 40-yard score.
Mark Johnston kicked the first of eight extra points to begin a busy night. He also had two sacks and blocked a punt.
The Spartans answered with their own scoring drive, which included a 42-yard screen pass and a 22-yard TD run. The PAT kick was blocked.
Dyllan Harris promptly returned the ensuring kick off 70 yards for a Wildcat touchdown, and the rout was on.
On the second play after a Stanwood punt, Dejon Devroe raced 43 yards for six.
Again Stanwood was forced to punt. This time it took Oak Harbor three plays to score with Zach Jones doing the honors from 30 yards out.
On the Spartans’ first play after the kickoff, Chris Humphries stripped the Stanwood runner of the ball and ran it back for a 20-yard fumble return, and Oak Harbor led 35-6.
It was three-and-out again for Stanwood, and on the Wildcats first play, Clay Doughty threw a 35-yard TD pass to Devroe as Oak Harbor scored 35 points in just over six minutes.
The Wildcats also scored on their first two possessions of the second quarter. Harris returned a punt 22 yards to set up a Doughty-to-Lollar 30-yard TD pass.
Stanwood turned the ball over on downs, then Doughty tossed to Harris for a 25-yard gain to the 1-yard line. Quinn Karney scored on the next play, and Oak Harbor led 56-6 with just under three minutes left in the half.
After Johnston’s blocked punt, the Wildcats took over on the Stanwood 16 but took a knee twice to run out the first-half clock.
Reserves played the second half for Oak Harbor.
Oak Harbor finished with 384 yards to the Spartans’ 158.
Lollar ran six times for 91 yards; Devroe had 71 on four carries and Jones ran just once for 30.
Ryan Valencia led the backups with 31 yards on eight carries, Karney had 25 on five and Tyler Snavely 20 on seven.
Nine Wildcats earned carries in the game.
Doughty was a perfect three-for-three passing for two touchdowns and 90 yards.
Mike Laningham aided the defense with a sack.
Oak Harbor coach Jay Turner was impressed with his team’s offensive performance. He noted that even though Stanwood (1-3, 1-6) has struggled to win games, its “defense has been pretty good this year.”
