Central Whidbey Fire & Rescue responded to a driftwood fire early Sunday morning at Keystone State Park that appeared to be caused by an illegal campfire.

The department got the call at 3:05 a.m. and crews arrived to see about 60 feet of driftwood ablaze, Fire Chief Ed Hartin said.

“It had been burning for a while,” Hartin said.

Two hours later, the department was still on the scene putting out hot spots.

Campfires are not permitted at Keystone State Park.

Although the department’s marine unit has been active in recent days, this was its first fire call during the Fourth of July weekend, Hartin said.

During daybreak, the crew could see what appeared to be a campfire ring.

Hartin said he was thankful the weather isn’t as hot and the conditions as dry as last year but still asked for residents to use extra caution this weekend.
