Cody Roberts’ home run polished off Anacortes in Central/South Whidbey Little League’s 12-1 win in the 11/12 district tournament Saturday, July 9, in Sedro-Woolley.
The win came a day after Central/South Whidbey dropped the tournament opener 6-3 to Sedro-Woolley.
Central/South Whidbey now takes on North Whidbey in a loser-out game at 6 p.m. Monday, July 11.
Roberts’ “walkoff” blast in the bottom of the fifth inning put the 10-run mercy rule in play and eliminated Anacortes from the tournament.
Central/South Whidbey also had an impressive first inning. Roberts reached on an error and Andrew Hilton and Aston Leland singled to load the bases. Josh Sterba walked, forcing in one run, then Hawthorne Wolfe slashed a three-run double to put Central/South Whidbey up 4-0.
Scott Hilborn reached on a fielder’s choice in the second inning and eventually scored to push the lead to 5-0.
In the third, singles by Sterba and Wolfe led to another run.
Roberts boarded on another error and Hilton singled in front of a two-run double by Leland in the fourth.
In the fifth, Sage Sharp and Tyler Thrasher walked, and Sharp scored on Hilborn’s fielder’s choice. After Nick Black walked, Roberts followed with his three-run home run.
Pitchers Black, Leland, Wolfe and Sterba combined to limit Anacortes to only four hits and one walk while striking out 10.
In the loss to Sedro-Woolley, Central/South Whidbey scored first with two runs in the second inning. Roberts doubled and scored on Sterba’s hit, then Sterba scored on Leland’s sacrifice.
Sedro-Woolley scored once in the third and four times in the fourth to go up 5-2.
Central/South Whidbey could get only one run back, tallying in the bottom of the fourth when Roberts walked and scored on a sacrifice.
