Demons, exorcism and the existence of the devil will be examined at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27 at LIFETREE CAFE. The program, titled “Is the Devil Real: An Exorcist Tells All,” features interviews with people who claim to have had encounters with demons, including a clergyman who has conducted many exorcisms — the removal of demonic spirits. “Satan is one who takes advantage of vulnerable people,” the clergyman says. “He’ll use any opening he finds in people to pollute, contaminate, tarnish, and destroy them.” Admission to the 60-minute event is free. “The Healing Power of Unselfishness,” a hour-long presentation by speaker Lois Carlson, is at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at the FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST SCIENTIST in Oak Harbor. Carlson will discuss how she overcame personal issues like suicidal tendencies and drug addiction; she has devoted her entire 2016 lecture series to this topic. Carlson learned that through helping others, she was protected from self-absorption and, instead, became absorbed in her own healing practice. Carlson has been working in the healing ministry of Christian Science for 40 years and is a published author who teaches a course on Christian Science in Chicago. During her talk, Carlson will challenge audience members to think beyond themselves and consider what media sources they are allowing to influence their thinking. COFFEE BREAK BIBLE STUDY will conclude the current season with a 6-week study of the New Testament book of Philippians, began Thursday, April 7. This letter, written by the Apostle Paul to a group of first-century Christians, speaks to all believers everywhere of standing firm in the faith, living in humility and unity with each other, and being committed to spreading the good news of Jesus. This study meets weekly from 10-11:15 a.m. each Thursday, at the Christian Reformed Church, 1411 Wieldraayer Road (off of Swantown Road).
