The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is working with the Island County Sheriff’s Office to investigate a burglary and mail theft at the Clinton Post Office overnight between July 30 and 31.
An employee of the post office, located on Deer Lake Road, reported Thursday that it is open for P.O. box customers and for customers to pick up parcels, but it remains closed for retail services. An earlier message from a post office employee stated that the burglar or burglars stole packages and caused a huge mess, pulling out “every single piece of mail from the P.O. boxes.”
John A. Wiegand, a postal inspector, wrote in an email to The Record that the preliminary investigation revealed that mail and parcels were taken, but that the Postal Inspection Service is working to confirm the number of items taken and and to contact victims who may have been affected.
“We do have several leads we are following down and hope to be able to provide more information as it becomes releasable,” he wrote.
Anyone with information can contact the 24-hour line at 877-876-2455.
Thursday morning, a resident posted on social media that a pile of opened mail was found and turned over to the post office.
Detective Ed Wallace with the Island County Sheriff’s Office reported that investigators are going through video and may release some footage, as well as more information, in the next couple of days.
A post office burglary and theft of mail would be both state and federal crimes, the sheriff’s office reported.
