The Boys and Girls Club of Oak Harbor is holding its own food drive to contribute to the Christmas in July drive put on by the Soroptomist’s International of Oak Harbor.

To add to the fun, boys are competing against girls to see who can gather the most donations. The food drive at the Boys and Girls Club started Friday, July 15, and the children have already collected 500 items from their own homes, friends and various family members.

Thirteen-year-old Dillan Miller is excited about the collection drive.

“I figured that we already have enough stuff to eat and we would like to give it to those who don’t have anything. It is a way for the kids to give back to others in the community and an example of kids helping other kids” Miller said.

In addition, the Boys and Girls Club of Oak Harbor collects money that is used to make food baskets for families in need throughout the year.

Program Director Norrie Perreault is pleased with the children’s efforts.

“The community always gives to the Boys and Girls Club. Now it is our turn to give back to the community and a good way for the children to learn to give to others,” Perreault said.

The Boys and Girls Club will continue collecting food throughout the week. Donations for Help House may be dropped off at the Boys and Girls Club location at the Roller Barn in Oak Harbor.
