A Coast Guard helicopter joined the search for a suicidal subject on North Whidbey Monday.
The man was found hiding in the Jones and Henni roads area after a five-hour search involving three agencies, according to Deputy Chief Mike Brown with North Whidbey Fire and Rescue.
The search drew a lot of attention from North Whidbey residents, some of whom reported seeing a circling helicopter shining a floodlight.
The Island County Sheriff’s Office was involved in the search, along with the fire department and Coast Guard.
“It was a team effort,” Brown said.
The suicidal man’s friends alerted police that he was a danger to himself Monday afternoon.
Investigators believed he was hiding in a wooded area, so the Coast Guard was called in to assist. The helicopter has infrared capability, Brown said, which aids in locating warm bodies.
The search started at around 4 p.m. and the man was located at 9 p.m. Brown said he didn’t know if the man was found in a woods, but he had been actively avoiding searchers.
