Reaching for a cup of coffee had a frightening consequence for a Langley driver on Thursday.

According to the Island County Sheriff’s Office, Amanda Gage was southbound in a 1991 Chevy Suburban on Bayview Road at about 12:30 when her vehicle left the roadway and rolled onto its side. The cause, police say, was a moment of inattention due to reaching for coffee.

Lt. Evan Tingstad said Gage, 32, had just passed Apollo Road and was approaching the curve on Bayview Road when she reached for the beverage and the car began to drift to the southbound shoulder.

“When she noticed it, she overcorrected, crossed the opposing lane of traffic and slopped her Suburban onto its side.”

Gage was the only person in the car at the time and was not injured in the crash. The exent of the damage to the vehicle is unclear.

Tingstad said Gage was cited with a traffic infraction, which he believes was for “wheels off the roadway.”

The single-car accident did slow traffic, but both lanes of the busy road remained open.
