A public hearing on a proposal to shorten the Fourth of July fireworks season in Island County by one day next year will be held in Coupeville Monday.

The Board of Commissioners will discuss a plan to bring county code into conformance with state standards.

The public is invited to speak at the meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. in the Commissioner’s Hearing Room.

“It simply puts us in line with state standards,” Island County Sheriff Mark Brown said.

Existing county code permits the discharge and sale of fireworks from noon on June 28 through noon on July 6.

State rules have a similar schedule, but fireworks season ends on July 5 and allows for fewer firing hours.

The discrepancy has been known for sometime and was discussed by the board at length in 2012.

The rules were never changed, however, as there was a simultaneous discussion about whether or not to make the county’s rules even more restrictive than the state’s.

The issue was raised again this year and a majority of the board, Commissioners Kelly Emerson and Jill Johnson, agreed to proceed only with the plan to align county and state rules.

Some residents are still advocating for tighter restrictions and Brown said he will be at the meeting to answer questions from the public.
