Monday, the commissioners unanimously voted to suspect their travel allowances again this year. That’s comparable to a 10-percent reduction in their salaries.

In addition, commissioners decided earlier this year to place non-represented employees on a less expensive medical plan, which substantially reduces the value of those benefits. The commissioners and all elected officials are among those affected by the change.

On Monday, the commissioners approved the resolution suspending their 2010 travel allowance without comment. At an earlier round of budget cutting, the commissioners also suspended their travel allowance for 2009.

Past commissioners created the travel allowances for the board. Each commissioner normally receives $750 a month for all the traveling they do.

The commissioners receive an annual salary of $78,500 a year, plus benefits.
