Island County Democrats’ and Republicans’ votes in Tuesday’s presidential primary were pretty similar to statewide results.
Democratic voters were more active than Republicans in the election, even though the results were meaningless when it comes to delegates in the Democratic Party. In Island County, 12,308 Democrats and 10,582 Republicans voted.
In the state, 769,000 Democrats participated in the election, as compared to 574,000 Republicans.
Democratic voters in the county and the state chose Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders. The margin in the state was 52.6 percent for Clinton and to 47.4 percent for Sanders.
In the county, it was nearly a mirror image with 52.5 percent for Clinton and 47.5 percent for Sanders.
The results were very different from the Democratic caucuses in which Sanders was the run-away winner with 73 percent of the statewide vote. For the Democrats, the delegates are awarded through the caucus process and the primary was essentially a “beauty contest.”
Republican voters had twice as many candidates to choose from, even though Donald Trump is the only one still in the race.
Trump got 75.5 percent of the votes, Ted Cruz got 10.8 percent, John Kasich got 9.9 percent and Ben Carson scored 3.9 percent.
The average voter turnout statewide was 33 percent. In Island County, 44.5 percent of registered voters returned ballots.
