Island County officials have decided to share federal stimulus money the county received for roadway preservation.

Joe Araucto, Island County traffic engineer, said the county will use funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to replace pavement on roads in Langley and Coupeville, as well as a chip seal project in Oak Harbor.

The county is asking for bids for pavement overlay on Maxwelton Road on South Whidbey, Third Street in Langley, and Front and Alexander streets in Coupeville. Araucto said county crews will do the work on NE Regatta Drive in Oak Harbor. All these projects will be funded by money from President Obama.

But in addition to the stimulus-funded projects, Araucto said the county is asking for bids on the annual list of overlay projects. About 40 miles of county roads will be re-paved this year.

“It’s a little more than last year, but it’s low compared to previous years,” the engineer said.
