Three appeared to be the magic number this season as far as all-league selections go for the Coupeville fastpitch and baseball teams.

The girls and the boys each received one first-team selection apiece and two second team-selections.

Taking first-team honors for fastpitch was senior Erica Lamb, who batted .360 and played outfield most of 2003. Over her four year high school career Lamb played every position for head coach Randy Dickson, including pitcher when the team competed in slow pitch.

“Erica’s done everything I’ve ever asked her to do,” he said. She’s got a great heart, great desire and she’s fun to be around.”

Also taking home Northwest A second-team honors was third baseman Christine Larson.

“She’s very consistent, a very hard worker, Dickson said. “She’s kind of a quiet leader, we’re going to miss her at third that’s for sure.”

Sophomore Stacie Farmer rounded out the all-league selections at short stop. Farmer led the team in batting average at .380 and came up with several important defensive plays clogging up the hole between second and third.

“She plugged the hole very nicely,” Dickson said. “She has very tight defense and she was the catalyst for our offense.”

Although he is happy to see the girls receive the honors, Dickson felt there could have been even more Coupeville girls recognized.

“I thought some of my other seniors should have made it,” he said.

On the boys side, senior Dale Horton picked up the lone first-team selection for the Wolves. The left-handed Horton worked as the team’s number one pitcher and first-baseman on his off days.

“He consistently came up big for us in games, either with his pitching or hitting and most of the time with both,” head coach Willie Smith said.

Horton led the team in batting average at .429, had zero errors in 103 chances and ended the season with a 3.19 earned run average.

“What we’ll miss the most is his demeanor and workman-like approach to games and practices,” Smith said.

Senior Mark Whittaker collected second-team honors at the catcher position where he batted .395 with one double and two triples this season. Whitaker has been the starting catcher for the Wolves since his sophomore year and has been calling games by himself since his junior year.

“He always brought total effort to each game and really showed our kids how you’re supposed to approach the game,” Smith said. “It’s going to be extremely difficult to replace Mark because I felt very comfortable allowing Mark to run the game as well as run catchers drills during practice.”

The other Wolf gaining Northwest A recognition was junior Casey Mitchell in the outfield. Mitchell led Coupeville with seven doubles, 11 stolen bases and 16 RBI.

Mitchell’s work ethic is something Smith is excited about returning to next year’s squad, where he hopes it will rub off.

“He is a fiery competitor who expects perfection in everything that he does,” Smith said. “He will be our leader on the field next year and I believe that if our team follows he is in intensity and work ethic, we are going to be pretty tough to beat.”
