Hot one day and cold the next.

Coming off a 20-hit performance last Friday, the Coupeville High School softball team could manage only two in an 8-0 loss to visiting Granite Falls Tuesday, May 7.

Hailey Hammer blooped a single in the first inning and Bree Messner ripped a double in the third for the two Coupeville hits.

Co-coach David King said, “We struggled with the fastball tonight. We will see a similar pitcher on Thursday at Sultan. We will look to make some adjustments tomorrow in practice and see if we can’t get the bats going again.”

The Sultan (7-10, 8-11) game wraps up the regular season for the Wolves.

Granite Falls (12-5, 13-6) finished with 10 hits, including four triples.

While the offense struggled, the defense came up with some nice plays, according to King.

Haley Sherman robbed Granite Falls of an extra-base hit with a running grab in left field, pitcher McKayla Bailey made two nice plays on consecutive hitters in the fourth and catcher Bessie Walstad gunned down a would-be stealer.

The game was the final home game for seniors Walstad and Maria Rockwell.

After the Sultan contest, Coupeville heads to district Friday and Saturday at Sedro-Woolley.

The Wolves (5-13, 6-13) open with Lynden Christian (6-14) at 4 p.m. Friday. The winner and loser meet its counterpart from the Meridian (5-14)/Nocksack Valley (12-8) game at 6.
