While the Coupeville High School baseball team received strong play on many fronts in its 8-0 win at La Conner Friday, April 8, the leading effort came from senior CJ Smith.

Smith pitched a four-hit shutout, striking out six and walking none. On offense, he stroked two hits, both doubles, scored two runs, drove in two more and stole a base.

Smith pitched out of two-on, two-out jams in the first and second innings, then faced only one batter of the minimum the remainder of the game.

Back-to-back doubles by Smith and Julian Welling gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

In the fourth, Kory Score reached on an error and later scored on Matt Hilborn’s ground out.

Coupeville added two runs in the fifth. Joey Lippo singled, and an out later Smith walked. The pair moved up with stolen bases, then Lippo scored on an error. Welling singled in Smith.

A four-run sixth cemented the win. Dane Lucero and Hilborn singled and Gabe Wynn reached on an error to load the bases. Cameron Toomey-Stout’s sacrifice fly drove in one run, Hunter Smith’s single added another, then CJ Smith’s second double plated two more.

An injury to starting catcher Cole Payne forced Coupeville coach Marc Aparicio to field a shuffled defensive lineup, and the new arrangement played error-free ball.

The Smith brothers generally patrol the middle infield, but with CJ on the mound and Hunter taking over for Payne behind the plate, Hilborn handled shortstop while Lippo and Nick Etzell split duties at second base.

“We played great D,” Aparicio said. “No errors.”

Coupeville (4-6) plays at Blaine (6-5) at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 11.
