Coupeville’s High School football team came ready to play and the big homecoming crowd at Mickey Clark Field Friday night went home happy as the Wolves defeated Lakewood 28-7 to notch their second straight Cascade League victory.

In a game where a strong wind blowing out of the west was a definite factor, Coupeville’s swarming defensive unit held the Cougars to minus 15 yards on offense in the first half.

“Before the game, I think only the players and the coaching staff thought we had a chance to win tonight,” head coach Ron Bagby said. “We felt like we could run the ball right at them on offense and that’s what we did.”

The Wolves rolled up 280 yards in total offense, 252 of them on the ground.

Coupeville held Lakewood to three plays and out on its first possession and after a short punt into the wind, went to work on the Cougar 38-yard line.

Quarterback James Smith engineered a seven-play drive capped by a 20-yard dash by Dillon Hall

for the Wolves’ first touchdown.

Gary Manker added the extra point kick and Coupeville had a 7-0 lead.

Hall, a junior running back who has done a great job in the last two games after being pressed into service due to an injury to the Wolves’ leading rusher, Clay Hughes, had a career night. He carried the ball 27 times for 103 yards and a touchdown. He also returned an intercepted pass 32 yards in the third quarter for Coupeville’s fourth score.

Bagby said Hall is a quiet type of player who never says too much.

“I don’t know what to say, other than the linemen blocked for me tonight and it felt good intercepting that pass,” Hall said.

Smith scored the Wolves’ second touchdown on a 1-yard run at the 6:46 mark of the second quarter and then hit Alex Evans with a pass for a 2-point conversion to up the lead to 15-0.

Coupeville once again had a short field to work with prior to its second score.

Forced to punt from his own end zone, Lakewood’s Michael Mauer hit one of his blockers with the punt and Coupeville’s Tervor Pigasch fell on the ball at the Cougar 3-yard line.

“It was great out there tonight,” the elated Smith said after the game. “The line blocked real good the whole game and our backs ran hard. Our defense did a fantastic job, they really took it to them. It was great to win our homecoming game.”

The Wolves put the game out of reach early in the third quarter scoring a pair of touchdowns within a span of 21 seconds.

Smith scored his second TD on a 1-yard run after Powers Lohner recovered a Lakewood fumble on the Cougars’ 25-yard line.

Nine plays later, Smith punched the ball in the end zone and Manker’s kick made the count 22-0.

On the Cougars’ first play after the kickoff, Hall picked off an Andrew Campbell pass and took the ball to the house for the Wolves’ final score.

“Our defense played a great game and the score could have been even more than it was if there hadn’t been a couple of penalties that stalled drives,” Bagby said.

Coupeville was penalized five times for 50 yards and had a Hall touchdown at the 22-second mark of the first period called back on a holding penalty.

Lakewood scored its lone touchdown with 9:53 remaining in the game on a 35-yard Campbell to Zach Harrah pass.

Coupeville ends the regular season Friday by hosting Cedarcrest in a 7 p.m. game.

“Cedarcrest has a good ball club with a lot of good athletes,” Bagby said. “What we have to do is continue to improve just like we did tonight and get ready for the sub-district.”
