After a series of close games, the Coupeville High School softball team cruised by host Friday Harbor 11-1 in five innings Saturday, March 26.
The Wolves scored six runs in the first inning and added three more in the second to take control early and remove any suspense. Coupeville’s first five games, four won by the Wolves, were close.
“It was a walkfest,” coach Kevin McGranahan said. The Wolverine pitcher walked 11, and seven of those free passes came around to score.
Meanwhile, Coupeville pitcher, Katrina McGranahan, “pitched good all day, keeping them at bay,” coach McGranahan, Katrina’s father, said.
The sophomore pitcher tossed a three-hitter, striking out five and allowing no earned runs.
She received help from her defense. Catcher Sarah Wright gunned down leadoff runners trying to steal in the first and second innings. Shortstop Mikayla Elfrank recorded an unassisted double play to defuse another threat.
Six walks, a double by Katrina McGranahan and singles by Elfrank and Wright produced Coupeville’s six-run first inning.
Hits by Wright, Veronica Crownover and Lauren Rose and three walks led to three runs in the second inning.
A single by McGranahan and an error helped the Wolves score a run in the third.
A walk to Crownover, a single by Jae LeVine and an error in the fourth inning accounted for the final Coupeville run.
Coupeville (5-1) opens conference play when Port Townsend (0-3) visits at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 31.
