Four periods of strong defense helped make up for two less-than stellar offensive quarters by the Coupeville High School girls basketball team in its 47-24 win at Chimacum Thursday, Feb. 4.
With the victory, the Wolves (8-0, 14-4) remain undefeated in Olympic League play with one game remaining. They will celebrate Senior Night when they host second-place Klahowya (4-4, 5-13) at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6.
“I’m looking for us to come out Saturday and play a complete game,” coach David King said. “We need to strive to be consistent from the beginning of the game until the final buzzer. When we play well and things are clicking, we are a fun team to watch.”
Coupeville won’t play again until the district tournament, beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Sumner High School against a yet-to-be determined opponent.
The Wolves scored 18 points in the first quarter and 17 in the third in the win over Chimacum (1-7, 4-15). They tallied only six in each of the other two quarters.
No problem. The Coupeville defense held the Cowboys to single digits every quarter.
Makana Stone assisted on a basket by Tiffany Briscoe to start the game and then added 10 points of her own as Coupeville led 18-8 in the first quarter.
Although the Wolves scored only six points in the second period, it limited Chimacum to four and led 24-12 at halftime.
Turnovers were the culprit in the second quarter. After committing only one in the first period, the Wolves had 15 in the second.
Coupeville got back on track and blitzed the Cowboys 17-3 in the third frame to cement the win.
Up 41-15, King was able to give his reserves extended playing time in the fourth quarter.
King liked how his club picked up its rebounding effort in the second half. The Wolves grabbed 38 after the break after collecting only 11 in the first half. Chimacum totaled 21 for the game.
Lindsey Roberts led all rebounders with 11, five on the offensive end, turning one into a put-back bucket.
Coupeville received strong all-around games on several fronts.
Stone finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds and three assists; Mia Littlejohn had seven points, five assists and two steals; Roberts had six points to go along with her 11 rebounds; Tiffany Briscoe had four points, five rebounds and two steals; and Lauren Grove had three points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Kailey Kellner added four points and Kyla Briscoe three.
Bailey Castillo scored 12 points for Chimacum.
