The Coupeville High School girls basketball continued its winning ways Tuesday, Feb. 3, defeating visiting Port Townsend 53-35.

The Wolves led throughout, and the 18-point winning margin may make it look like an easy win — but it wasn’t.

Although the pesky Redhawks (2-5, 2-15) sit at the bottom of the Olympic League standings, they didn’t play scared against the first-place Wolves.

Port Townsend forced Coupeville into an uneven, turnover-filled game.

Coach David King wasn’t sure why his club struggled with the Redhawks. He surmised it might still be hung over from the emotionally-charged win last Friday that wrapped up the team’s first league title in 13 years, or it might have been the environment of Tuesday’s game.

The Wolves played at home but not in their gym. A malfunction with the curtain that separates the gym into halves for school physical education classes was stuck in the down position. That forced the game across the hall to the middle school gym.

One thing King was sure about was the lift senior Wynter Thorne gave his team. Thorne came off the bench and hit several timely hoops that slowed Redhawk rallies.

Makana Stone scored six points, Julia Myers four and Thorne two (along with an assist) as Coupeville led 14-11 after one quarter.

Stone tacked on eight more points in the second quarter, and the Wolves went into halftime up 30-19.

Port Townsend wouldn’t go away, hitting the first four points of the second half.

Myers then scored six straight points, with assists from Kacie Kiel and Madeline Strasburg, and Mia Littlejohn later added a three-pointer to help Coupeville go into the final period with a 41-29 lead.

Strasburg, who didn’t score, made her presence felt by getting the ball to open teammates and recording nine assists, a team high for Coupeville this season.

Stone collected 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Myers had 14 points and six boards, and Kiel scored two points and had 3 assists.

Littlejohn had two blocks to go with her three-pointer.

Thorne scored eight points, Hailey Hammer four and Monica Vidoni two.

Coupeville (7-0, 13-5) plays at home for the final time at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, when Chimacum (2-5, 3-14) visits.

The final conference game is at Klahowya at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9.
