Several former Coupeville High School athletes are continuing their careers at the collegiate level. Here’s a look how ex-Wolves competing in fall sports performed this season:
Tyler King wrapped up his cross country career at the University of Washington with an outstanding effort in the Division I Western Regional Meet Nov. 13.
King finished fifth overall (31:08.1) and first for the Huskies out of 205 runners over the muddy 10,000-meter course at Jefferson Golf Course in Seattle, helping the UW win its first-ever regional title and an automatic berth into the NCAA championship meet.
At the NCAA meet Nov. 21, the Huskies finished eighth, second best in school history, as King placed 248th.
Earlier in the season, the Husky senior helped the UW finish fourth in the Pac-12 championships, running 26th (third for the Huskies) in a field of 79 Oct. 30.
King was 84th out of 244 Oct. 16 at the Wisconsin Invitational, which boasts the strongest field outside of the NCAA finals.
He earned All-American status and second-team all-Pac 12 in 2014.
Nick Streubel is a redshirt freshman on the Central Washington University football team. The 6-3, 301-pound offensive lineman appeared in six games for the Wildcats (5-5) this fall.
Two of the Wildcats’ wins came over league opponent Simon Fraser University (Burnaby, B.C.), where two of Streubel’s high school teammates, freshmen defensive backs Josh Bayne and Jake Tumblin, play.
Bayne appeared in eight games and recorded 18 tackles (13 solo) and broke up three passes for the Clan (0-9).
Tumblin played in four games and registered 10 tackles (four solo).
Mitch Pelroy is a junior defensive back and return man for the University of Montana Western (Dillon), where he helped the 10th-ranked NAIA Bulldogs (7-3) finish third in the Frontier Conference.
Pelroy returned nine kickoffs for 195 yards (a 21.7-yard average), recorded 13 tackles (eight solo), recovered one fumble and defended one pass.
Joel Walstad, a freshman kicker/punter at Midland University (Fremont, Neb.), played on the JV football team for the Warriors this fall. No statistics were kept for JV games, according to assistant coach Joshua Caraway.
Monica Vidoni played on the Rainey River Community College (International Falls, Minn.) volleyball team this year, participated in 14 sets and recorded five kills for the Voyageurs (12-18).
She will also play basketball for Rainey River this winter.
