Coupeville High School’s Class of 2008 will celebrate its achievements when members graduate Friday, June 6, at 6 p.m. in the high school’s main gymnasium.

Approximately 75 students will receive their diplomas Friday night.

The Class of 2008 is the first required to meet the new graduation requirements set forth by the state.

Christine Sears, high school counselor, said all students passed the reading and writing sections of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning. Students also had to complete a senior project.

Several students are scheduled to speak during Friday’s ceremony. Valedictorian Danny Brown and four salutatorians, Nathan Stroud, Kyle Wilcox, Sam Parker, and Michael Vier, will all offer words of wisdom.

Traditionally, the senior class chooses one teacher to speak, but this year there will be three on tap. Middle school teacher Patsi Waller, high school teacher Ryan Grenz and Athletic Director Willie Smith will take turns at the podium.

Friday’s graduation ceremony culminates a week of senior activities.

Thursday’s schedule includes the senior assembly at 9 a.m. Then, at 10 a.m., the seniors will parade down Main Street and then enjoy a brunch at Coupeville United Methodist Church. They will go through rehearsal, a senior group photo and individual photos later that afternoon.

The senior trip will follow Friday’s graduation ceremony.

Oak Harbor High School’s graduation doesn’t take place until Monday, June 16, 7 p.m. at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

A special graduation section will be published in Saturday’s Whidbey News-Times picturing the graduates from each school and featuring the top 10 students at Coupeville and Oak Harbor.
