A Coupeville man is accused of pointing a handgun at a fellow passenger’s chest while waiting in line at the Clinton ferry dock, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Randolph C. Coyne in Island County Superior Court April 16 with assault in the second degree.

Coyne, 55, was in a car, waiting in line at the ferry dock April 11. The 22-year-old victim was in a separate car.

The police report said Coyne was upset with the younger man for smoking in a car next to his. An argument escalated and Coyne allegedly pulled a handgun and pointed in at the other’s man chest, the report said.

Trooper with the Washington State Patrol arrested Coyne on the vessel after it docked in Mukilteo.

Officers said they found a semiautomatic handgun in Coyne’s jacket pocket. He has a concealed weapons permit.

Coyne admitted that he did pull the gun and point it at the man, but he said the man had threatened him and took a step forward, the report stated.

A witness, however, said Coyne appeared to be the aggressor and had been profane, according to the report.

If convicted of the charge, Coyne could face from three to nine months under the standard sentencing range.
