The Coupeville High School baseball team broke out of a rut of inconsistent offense in a 10-3 win over visiting Sultan Wednesday, April 30.

The Wolves, behind nine hits, scored in all but one inning to turn back the winless Turks (0-16, 0-17).

As the offense was doing its thing, pitcher C.J. Smith threw a complete game five-hitter with 10 strikeouts and only one earned run.

“It was great to see him get back in the groove and be dominant on the mound after a tough start last week against Granite Falls,” coach Willie Smith said.

“Offensively, we came out aggressive on the base paths and got great production out of the top of our lineup,” he added.

With the scored tied at 1, Coupeville plated four runs in the third inning. Jake Tumblin, Kurtis Smith, Ben Etzell and Aaron Trumbull had consecutive hits and chased Sultan starter Matt Baller.

After single runs in the fourth and fifth, Coupeville pushed across three more in the sixth. Tumblin singled and freshman Clay Reilly walked. After a double steal, Etzell thumped a double to score two. Etzell scored on an error off the bat of Josh Bayne.

Tumblin went 3-for-3 with a double, two stolen bases, three runs and an RBI.

“He is really starting to set the table for our guys,” coach Smith said.

Etzell was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Bayne slugged a double, and C.J. Smith added an RBI single.

Coupeville (7-8, 8-8) continues a run of four games in four days by hosting Granite Falls (11-5, 12-6) at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 1.

Friday they return to Sultan, then Saturday at 3, they wrap up the regular season at Lakewood (6-10, 7-11).

The race for the conference championship is tight. Four teams, Archbishop Murphy (11-5, 11-7), Granite Falls (11-5, 12-6), South Whidbey (11-6, 12-6) and Cedarcrest (10-7, 11-7), are all bunched near the top. The teams play 18 league games.
