One woman’s discovery of a brood of owlets in Coupeville caught the eyes of many admirers on social media, including one South End photographer.

Geri Nelson said she was walking past Living Hope Foursquare Church on Northwest Broadway Street in Coupeville a few weeks ago when she noticed a bird’s nest above her in a tree.

Then she heard a little hoot.

“I looked up and there was the mama owl, and I saw a flutter of something, so I knew there was at least one baby in there,” Nelson recalled.

Nelson said she took some photos with her phone and posted them to a social media page with the hope that someone with a larger photography arsenal would be interested in taking pictures of the feathered family.

Cara Hefflinger answered the call.

Hefflinger, who works at the Clinton post office, said wildlife photography is her true passion.

“I think most of it is luck and time,” Hefflinger said about her photography.

“Gotta put a lot of time in to get something good.”

Hefflinger said she used a 600 mm camera lens to capture the cute photos. However, she cautions others to admire the owlets, their mom and other wildlife from afar.

“It’s very important to keep distance and respect for wildlife,” she said.

“The goal is to get them in nature … not spooking, scaring or upsetting them in any way.”
