A man and woman caught sleeping inside a running car with an interior bespeckled in white powder were recently charged with cocaine possession, court records indicate.

Prosecutors charged the two Coupeville residents, 44-year-old Barry Angasan and 57-year-old Janet Buchanan, in Island County Superior Court May 3 with possession of the drug.

Judge Vickie Churchill issued a $10,000 bench warrant on Angasan and a $5,000 warrant on Buchanan after they didn’t appear at a court hearing June 18.

According to court documents, Officer Serloyd Carter with the Oak Harbor Police Department responded to a report of a possible DUI on Pioneer Way in November of last year.

Carter found Angasan and Buchanan asleep inside a black Corvette parked in a lot. The car’s engine was running, the windshield wipers were on and the left signal light was activated.

Angasan woke up when the officer knocked on the window, but went back to sleep after saying something unintelligible, according to Carter’s report. Buchanan had an open wound on the bridge of her nose and dried blood on her face.

After finally waking Angasan up, the officer found white powder all over his seat and on the floor of the car. A container with white powder was found in Buchanan’s pocket, according to the report.

The officer conducted a presumptive field test for cocaine and the powder tested positive, the document indicates.
