The undefeated Mount Baker High School girls basketball team used a long-range attack to build an early lead then held off a furious Coupeville rally to defeat the Wolves 50-47 Monday, Dec. 7, in Deming.
Coupeville trailed by 14 points, 46-32, heading into the final period and rode a strong defensive effort to get back into the game.
“The fourth was a complete quarter for us,” coach David King said. “We held them to one field goal; our defense raised the bar and clamped down and caused some turnovers.”
Freshman Lindsey Roberts led the offensive during the rally, scoring six points.
Mount Baker’s Emily Brandland scored 12 points in the first quarter and the Mountaineers built a 17-10 lead.
Coupeville cut the margin to one, 27-26, on a bucket by Tiffany Briscoe (assisted by Mia Littlejohn) at the buzzer going into halftime.
Makana Stone did most of the damage for the Wolves in the quarter, knocking down several jumpers.
Mount Baker scored all nine of its second-quarter points on three-balls. In all, it hit nine long-balls in the game.
The Mountaineers (4-0) bounced back, building a 15-point lead in the third quarter, setting up Coupeville’s strong finish.
“This game was a good building block for us,” King said. “Mount Baker is a very good team that can shoot the ball well. We just need to play a full 32 minutes. As a team we know we can compete with the very good teams.
“It’s still very early, but these players are showing that they won’t quit despite the score. Being down 15 midway through the third and still giving ourselves a chance to tie the game late shows the resolve these players have.”
Stone collected 23 points, 14 rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Littlejohn scored five points and handed out eight assists, and Kailey Kellner had three points and six assists.
Roberts finished with nine points, Tiffany Briscoe six and Kyla Briscoe one.
The Wolves outrebounded Mount Baker 30-25.
Coupeville, however, hit only eight of 19 free throws; the Mountaineers were 6-for-10.
Coupeville (2-2) plays Orcas Island (1-0) at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, at home. A game between the Coupeville and Orcas Island boys will follow at 5 p.m.
