The long trip to Cheney for the state 1A track meet will not be as lonely this year for Coupeville High School head coach Randy King.

The long trip to Cheney for the state 1A track meet will not be as lonely this year for Coupeville High School head coach Randy King.

After qualifying only a smattering of athletes in recent years, the Wolves will send six boys and four girls in individual events and three relay teams to Eastern Washington University for the three-day (Thursday through Saturday, May 26-28) meet.

The Coupeville athletes earned state slots by placing in the top three at the district meet Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21, in Bremerton.

In team scoring, the Coupeville boys finished second to Bellevue Christian 133-109 out of nine schools. The Wolves were fourth in the girls standings with 82 points; Charles Wright topped the field with 124.

Sophomore Jacob Smith paced the strong Coupeville showing by winning two individual events (100, 11.44; 200, 22.59) and running on the winning 4×400 relay team with Henry Wynn, Jared Helmstadter and Danny Conlisk (3:36.82).

Smith’s time in the 200 is a school record and the third fastest among 1A runners in Washington this spring.

Conlisk, a freshman, won the 800 (2:09.3).

Senior Dalton Martin qualified for state in three events by winning the discus (159-04), finishing second in the shot put (45-04) and getting third in the javelin (146-08).

Earlier this year, Martin tossed the discus a school record 161-07, the state’s third-best 1A mark.

Chris Battaglia (high jump, 5-04), Jordan Ford (pole vault, 12-09) and Mitchell Carroll (triple jump, 39-03) all earned thirds and state berths.

Ford’s mark broke his own school record by three inches.

Lathom Kelley, who has the state’s sixth-best 1A time in 300 hurdles, was injured and did not compete in the event. He hobbled his way to seventh in the long jump (14-08).

For the Coupeville girls, Makana Stone will return to state for the fourth consecutive year after winning three events.

She took the 400 (58.69) and ran on the winning 4×100 (51.21) and 4×200 (1:47.15) relay teams with Lauren Grove, Lindsey Roberts and Sylvia Hurlburt.

Stone has the state’s second-best 1A 400 time (58.55), the 4×200 team is ranked third (1:47) and the 4×100 team seventh (51.1).

Stone came into the meet with a state top-10 time in the 800 but chose to run the anchor of the 4×400 relay instead, hoping to help three teammates earn a trip to state. The relay squad, however, placed fifth and did not qualify.

Roberts was second in the 100 hurdles (16.9), Grove third in the 200 (26.88) and Skyler Lawrence third in the shot put (31-09.25) to claim state berths.

Henry Wynn (boys 1,600, 4:58.03), Connor Thompson (boys triple jump, 35-11), Hurlburt (girls 200, 26.96) and Allison Wenzel (girls javelin, 85-10) all placed fourth and will be state alternates.
