Controlling the match when it needed to most, the Coupeville High School volleyball team slipped by visiting North Mason 3-2 Thursday, Sept. 22.
The teams split the first four games, then the Wolves blitzed North Mason 15-5 in the fifth and deciding set to take the non-league match.
Coupeville won the first and third games (25-22, 25-18), while the 2A Bulldogs (0-3, 0-4) took the second and fourth (25-20, 25-22).
Topping the stat line for the Wolves were Hope Lodell (20 digs, eight aces), Ashley Menges (seven aces, five assists), Payton Aparicio (six kills), Mikayla Elfrank (six kills) and Valen Trujillo (19 digs).
“We had some lapses in our focus and energy tonight but recovered well and found it within ourselves,” coach Cory Whitmore said. “I was happy to see the offense come from all over the front row, and our back row did a great job of cleaning up the defense.”
Coupeville (1-0, 3-2) goes to Klahowya (1-0, 3-1) in a battle for first place in the Olympic League at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27.
