The Sequim High School girls basketball team ended Coupeville’s five-game win streak with a 38-34 home win Wednesday, Jan. 6.

Coupeville, now 7-3 for the season, suffered its most “lopsided” loss of the year. Coupeville’s previous setbacks were by two and three points.

Coupeville trailed by nine points heading into the final quarter. Makana Stone scored 10 points and Coupeville sliced the gap to two points but couldn’t quite make it all the way back.

Stone scored the game’s first four points, then Sequim, taking advantage of Coupeville defensive breakdowns, according to coach David King, took over, leading 12-8 at the end of the period.

Coupeville made only one field goal in the second period and Sequim led 19-14 after two quarters.

Coupeville’s offense picked up in the third quarter, King said. The Briscoe sisters, Tiffany and Kyla, each hit jumpers and Kailey Kellner knocked down a three-pointer to lead the way.

Coupeville’s defense, however, “allowed them too many easy baskets,” King said, and Sequim built a 31-22 lead.

“The fourth was a whole different game for us,” King said. “We played with determination and showed what we are capable of.”

In addition to Stone’s 10 points in the fourth period, Lauren Grove scored on a “great drive for a layup,” King said.

Stone ended with 21 points, but no other Coupeville player scored more than Kellner’s four.

Grove had three points, and the Briscoes and Mia Littlejohn had two each.

Stone also had 16 rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Kellner added six rebounds and four assists, and Grove snared six rebounds, five at the offensive end. Littlejohn collected three steals.

“The stats don’t show it, but Tiffany played another solid game for us,” King said.

“Makana hustled all game and kept us close throughout. At times in the second half she brought the ball up and led us from the point guard spot.

“Kyla got extended time and played well. Her hitting the jumper will hopefully boost her confidence on the offensive end.

“Both Lauren and Lindsey (Roberts) did a good job diving in and looking to corral offensive rebounds. After last night’s game we talked about our guards improving their rebounding effort. So, that was a bright spot in tonight’s game.”

Coupeville hosts Mount Vernon Christian (4-4) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9.
