It would be hard for Coupeville to enter this weekend’s class A state volleyball tournament on a higher note.

The Wolves, ranked third in the most recent Associated Press poll, knocked off the number-one ranked team, Bush, on Saturday in a state seeding tournament at CHS.

“They played incredible,” Wolves’ coach Toni Crebbin said of her team.

Coupeville dropped its first game to Bush 14-25, but battled back for three straight wins, 25-20, 25-19, 25-23 to earn a number one seed this weekend.

The Blazers’ Jill Collymore, a University of Washington recruit, proved an intimidating factor at the start, but after game one something clicked among the Wolves.

“Half way through that game we finally started playing,” Crebbin said. “We realized she is just one player.”

Coupeville won an earlier match 25-13, 25-9, 25-21 over Bellevue Christian that moved them into the championship match.

Mindy Horr was 40-for-42 on her serves with 11 aces and 40 assists for the day. Taniel Lamb was 31-for-31 serving with 10 kills, Jennifer Bailey added 15 kills, followed by Kirsty Croghan with 14.

The Wolves, now 13-1 overall, begin state tournament action at 12:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12 at the Sun Dome against Zillah.

“They’ve done pretty well in the past and they always bring out a big crowd,” Crebbin said of the first round opponent.

Depending on what happens in round one, Coupeville could match up with nemesis La Conner in round two. The Braves handed the Wolves their only loss of the season last week. Coupeville, however, has defeated La Conner twice this season, including a tiebreaker win for the district title.

“That could be pretty interesting,” Crebbin said.

Whatever the case, Crebbin feels good about the Wolves’ overall chances at the state tournament.

“I feel like if we play like we did Saturday, we definitely should bring home some hardware,” she said.
