The Coupeville High School soccer team warmed up just in time to pull out a 2-1 win over host Chimacum in the conference opener Thursday, Oct. 15.

Tuesday, the Wolves played well but fell 1-0 at LaConner in the final non-league match.

Coupeville arrived at Chimacum at 3:46 for a 4 p.m. start, coach Troy Cowan said.

“We took the first half to warm up, and it showed,” he said. “The second half was much better and the girls played pretty well. We could have played better, but I was happy and proud of the girls and all of their hard work.”

The Wolves received their goals from the Littlejohn sisters.

First, freshman Kalia hit an “amazing shot,” Cowan said, then Mia scored from “long distance.”

In the La Conner match, Cowan used the opportunity to give his freshmen and sophomores playing time to lay “the foundation for years to come.”

Although La Conner (11-2) played its starters the entire game, Cowan said, “we dominated play and, without a doubt, won the possession battle.”

The Wolves recorded twice as many shots as La Conner and played 80 percent of the match at the Braves’ defensive end, Cowan said.

The Braves scored off a corner kick when the Wolves left a player unmarked,” Cowan said.

Cowan liked the play of his team, especially the efforts of Lindsay Roberts, Lauren Bayne, McKenzie Meyer, Lauren Grove and Jennifer Spark.

Coupeville (1-0, 3-4-3) hosts Klahowya (1-0, 7-3-1) at 11 a.m. Saturday in a showdown of the Olympic League’s best two teams.
