Sequim wasn’t very hospitable when three Coupeville High School athletic teams visited Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Sequim defeated the Coupeville volleyball team 3-0, the Coupeville soccer team 2-0 and the Coupeville tennis team 5-2.

Volleyball

Sequim (8-1), the second-place team in the Olympic League 2A division, won 25-17, 25-14, 25-13, to snap Coupeville’s five-match winning streak. Sequim also topped Coupeville 3-0 Sept. 14.

“We played tentative tonight and without fire to take down a very good Sequim team,” coach Cory Whitmore said.

“We had moments of brilliance, taking aggressive swings, but they would get back on our heels,” he added. “We’ll have a long week of practice to get our confidence back.”

Katrina McGranahan swatted 11 kills and 11 aces to propel Coupeville. Mikayla Elfrank added four kills, and Lauren Rose had 12 assists.

Valen Trujillo recorded 14 digs and Hope Lodell seven.

Next up for Coupeville is an important Olympic League match. The first-place Wolves (4-0, 7-3) host second-place Klahowya (3-1, 4-4) at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Soccer

Coupeville didn’t win, but the club was able to accomplish some of coach Troy Cowan’s goals.

“Non-conference matches offer a mixed bag of opportunities,” Cowan said. He chose to rest several starters and give some of the inexperienced players “some much-deserved match time…to see what they could do.”

“It’s a long season and we need to keep our eye on the prize.”

Cowan was pleased with the efforts of reserves Megan Thorn, Cassidy Moody and foreign exchange student Fanny Deprelle

“(They) were awesome, applying pressure, passing the ball and making some nice runs to add to our winning the possession game,” Cowan said.

Ema Smith, who will likely be the Wolves’ keeper next year, took over for senior starter Lauren Grove at halftime and “played tremendous,” according to Cowan.

“She was aggressive, charged the ball several times and her drop kick was smashing. She just needs more playing time.”

Two regulars, Sage Renninger and Megan DePorter, stood out, according to Cowan.

“Sage is really the field general, controlling the pitch with her possession and calmness,” Cowan said. “She never gets rattled and ignites a lot of our runs.

“Meanwhile, Megan has really been a nice fit with our defense. She has deceptive speed; several times yesterday she came from nowhere to save what appeared to be goal scoring opportunities.”

Starter Lindsey Roberts did not play because of an injury, and starter Lauren Bayne sat much of the match.

Overall, “the girls played extremely well even though the score doesn’t reflect the end result,” Cowan said.

Coupeville (4-1, 6-4-1) goes to Bellevue Christian at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, then hosts league leader Klahowya (4-0, 6-1-2) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Tennis

In the loss to Sequim, Coupeville’s William Nelson and Joey Lippo (6-2, 6-1) and Jimmy Myers and Grey Rische (7-6[7-5], 6-1) won second and third doubles.

Other results:

Singles: 1, Nick Etzell lost 6-2, 6-2; 2, Jakobi Baumann lost 6-2, 6-3; 3, Mason Grove lost 6-1, 6-1.

Doubles: 1, John McClarin/Joseph Wedekind lost 6-3, 6-4; 4, Tiger Johnson/Jaschon Baumann lost 6-0, 6-0.

Coupeville’s conference matches with Klahowya Oct. 6 and Chimacum Oct. 13 were rained out. Neither contest will be made up because Coupeville already clinched the Olympic League title.

Coupeville (4-0, 5-7) closes out the regular season at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at South Whidbey (7-4) in a non-conference match.

The Olympic League 1A Tournament is 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at Chimacum.
