Ten minute games go by pretty quickly, but Coupeville girls basketball coach Geoff Kappes liked what he saw from his team during a Northwest A/B jamboree Saturday night.

“Right away you can identify what the strengths and weaknesses are,” the first-year coach said. “I was really encouraged by how the girls played.”

Coupeville, which started off a bit sluggish, lost its first game 13-12 to La Conner, but bounced back nicely in its second game for a 10-7 victory over league opponent Mount Vernon Christian.

“Once the nerves kind of faded off the girls started to play some good basketball,” Kappes said.

The Wolves were led in game one by senior Brittany Black with five points and Jennifer Bailey with four. Not statistics were kept for the second game.

The Coupeville boys also split their contests on Saturday, losing 18-11 to La Conner before defeating Mount Vernon Christian 19-17.

“I was pleased with a lot of the stuff they did,” coach Randy King said. “Our defense was good, our rebounding was good, we did some good things on offense, but we’ve still got a lot of work ahead of us.”

The Wolves were led in scoring over two games by senior guard Mike Bagby with nine points. Junior Casey Larson added five points, while 6-foot-6 post Brian Miller tallied four.

Four other Northwest A/B teams: Darrington, Orcas Island, Mount Vernon Christian and La Conner, took part in Saturday’s jamboree.

“It was a success I think,” Kappes said. “It was nice to see some of the competition we’ll be up against in league.”

The Coupeville girls began their regular season last night at non-league South Whidbey. The travel to Cascade Christian Friday, Dec. 2 before hosting 2A Foster at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 7.

The boys began their season last night at home against South Whidbey. They host Meridian at 7:30 p.m., Friday Dec. 2 and Lakewood at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3.
