After a brief bump in the road, the Coupeville girls tennis team got back on track Wednesday afternoon, defeating 2A Blaine 5-1.
The Wolves, who won their first two matches of the season, dropped their next two to South Whidbey and Overlake, before beating the Borderites this week. With the victory Coupeville moved to 3-2 on the season.
The Wolves were led Wednesday by the strong play of their doubles teams. The number one duo of Jessica Boling and Bethany Horr won with ease, 6-0, 6-1 over Lindsey Taylor and Jessica Freeman of Blaine.The win improves their record to 3-1 for the season.
“They didn’t hold back or let down or anything,” head coach Cliff Horr said.
In a hard-fought battle, the number two team of Jennifer Boyer and Joivanna Cashen lost their first set 6-3, but bounced back nicely to win the next two sets 6-1, 6-4.
“I’m pleased with the way they’re learning to play doubles,” Horr said.
Also winning in doubles competition was Breanne Houlroyd and Meghan Tucker, who didn’t allow their opponents to score a point, taking their match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
On the singles side, number one player Mindy Horr struggled through her first set with Krista Jones, losing 6-2. She gathered her composure over the next two sets to take the match 6-1, 6-4. Horr now has an overall record of 4-1 for 2003.
“She wasn’t on in the beginning,” coach Horr said. “I was pleased that she managed to get control of herself and pull it out.”
Rounding out the wins for Coupeville was Heather Fakkema, who defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-1.
So far coach Horr is pleased with the way things have gone, minus the team’s first loss of the season.
“I was a little disappointed that we didn’t show better against South Whidbey,” he said. “We could have won.”
Overall the season has not varied much from what was anticipated.
“The season is going about as expected,” he said. “I’m hoping will can still make some improvements.”
Coupeville will take a week off for their spring break and will return to action at 3:30 p.m., Monday, April 14 at home against Chimicum, who they have already beaten this season.
