For the first time in the history of its program, Coupeville will host a district girls soccer match when the postseason begins Saturday, Oct. 31.

The Wolves will entertain the No. 3 team from the Nisqually League (most likely Vashon Island) at Wildcat Memorial Stadium in Oak Harbor in a loser-out match. The starting time has not been determined.

District matches are required to be played on turf fields; therefore, Coupeville will hold the match in neighboring Oak Harbor and not at Mickey Clark Field.

The Wolves are about to wrap up the Olympic League season. Monday, they lost 6-0 at Klahowya.

At 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, they will celebrate Senior Night when they play visiting Port Townsend (1-4, 1-10-2) in the regular-season finale. Regardless of the outcome, Coupeville will finish second in the Olympic League.

In the loss to Klahowya, the Eagles denied Coupeville a potential share of the 1A Olympic League soccer crown.

Ten days ago, Coupeville (3-2, 5-6-3) hung with the defending 1A state champions in a 2-0 loss. Monday, the Eagles (5-0, 11-3-1) dominated the first half with a cascade of five goals.

“We knew going into this match if we were going to beat the champs on their turf, it was going to take a gargantuan shift in the style of soccer we played and luck,” Coupeville coach Troy Cowan said. “Unfortunately, we had no luck. Our strategy shift was sound, but the champs are the champs for a reason, and we still have a lot to learn.”

Cowan said the Wolves went back to “what we do best: possession” in the second half and played much better.

Cowan praised the effort of his team, adding, “The important thing to remember is we are still a young team that is developing our skills and talents. We just need to stay positive and upbeat. We will eventually climb to the top of the mountain and knock off whoever is there.”
