The Coupeville Town Council will talk about the Big Rock during its meeting this evening.

The venerable glacial erratic, one of the largest stand-alone rocks in the Northwest, sits on land off South Main Street that is currently for sale.

Conard said she wants to get the council members’ thought on whether Big Rock needs public protection.

Big Rock, known as “The Rock of Ages” to past generations of Coupeville resiidents, currently sits between two parcels of property. One-third of it is on a property of a house and two-thirds of it is currently on the property of Big Rock apartments.

Conard said it would be difficult for anybody to build on the foot print of the Big Rock. First, it would be expensive to remove or destroy the rock and it is also located next to a stormwater detention system.

One possibility to add protection to the Big Rock is to see if its owner would be willing to place a conservation easement on it. Conard said the Town Council will meet in executive session Tuesday to talk about the value of such an easement.

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Hearing Room at the County Annex building.
