Coupeville welcomes new chamber director

Lindy Kortus took over as director of the Central Whidbey Chamber of Commerce several weeks ago and is enjoying her new job.

Visitors to Coupeville are welcomed by a new face at the Central Whidbey Visitor’s Center.

Lindy Kortus took over as director of the Central Whidbey Chamber of Commerce several weeks ago and is enjoying her new job.

Kortus said she took the position because she enjoys people and wants to promote local businesses.

“I wanted the opportunity to do this job because of the desire to promote historic Coupeville,” Kortus said. “I find the merchants and the general community on the same page.”

She said business owners are interested in preserving the historic character of the area while drawing in tourists.

Since starting her position in mid April, Kortus has recruited more volunteers to man the visitor’s center located in Coupe’s Village.

Currently 12 people volunteer to staff the visitor’s center. When Kortus started, she had three volunteers. Because there were so few volunteers, the Visitor’s Center hours of operation were erratic.

Kortus said the Visitor’s Center has been open every day for the past three weeks. She is also formalizing some of the Center’s operations, which should help recruiting efforts.

“It’s easier to help invite people in if it’s orderly,” Kortus said.

In addition to her recruiting efforts, Kortus plans on redesigning the Chamber’s Web site and help promote community events such as Penn Cove Water Festival, and Coupeville’s Memorial Day parade. She also wants to eventually expand the Visitor’s Center hours and improve its signs.

Prior to moving to the area, Kortus enjoyed a career in sales and marketing. In addition to working for the Chamber, she operates a small bed and breakfast along with her husband, Joel.

Carol Moliter, president of the Central Whidbey Chamber of Commerce, said Kortus’ background made her the best person for the job.

Kortus replaces prior director Rita Kuller, whose contract expired in March and who didn’t re-apply for the position, Moliter said.

Kuller couldn’t be reached for comment. She’s been busy recently tending to family matters.

Moliter said eight people from various parts of the island applied for the position and several members of the Chamber board interviewed three finalists before offering Kortus the position.
