A Coupeville woman died at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle this week after sustaining injuries Saturday in a three-car pile up on North Main Street.

Margaret Bagwell, 75, was in intensive care and in critical condition Tuesday but died later that day, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The accident occurred at about 7:45 p.m. at the Coupeville stoplight. Bagwell was traveling southbound on North Main Street in a 1993 Infinity J30 when she rear-ended a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup truck that was stopped at the light.

The impact pushed the truck into a third vehicle, a 2007 Volvo XC90, that was stopped at the head of the intersection.

“It was a chain reaction of one car hitting another car and that car hitting another car,” said acting Capt. Jerry Helm, of Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue.

Helm arrived at the scene and was surprised to recognize the truck as belonging to his brother, Matt Helm, also a firefighter.

Matt Helm was OK and assisting the other drivers.

Marjory Homan, the driver of the Volvo, was uninjured. Bagwell, however, was reportedly complaining of chest pain. She was transported to Whidbey General Hospital where she was later airlifted to Harborview.

According to the State Patrol, the cause of the accident remains under investigation though drugs or alcohol have been ruled out as factors in the crash.
