Chimacum finished a first-round sweep of the three other Olympic League 1A schools by defeating the host Coupeville High School boys basketball team 87-55 Wednesday, Jan. 21.

With the loss, the Wolves found themselves at the other end of the standings, now 0-3 in conference play (4-9 overall).

The Cowboys used a fast-break offense to race to transitions baskets, and, when forced to run half-court sets, took advantage of Coupeville’s aggressiveness to find open looks.

The Wolves, on the other hand, found it difficult to get good opportunities against the stout Cowboy defense.

The tone of the game was set right away as Chimacum raced to a 13-3 lead; it upped the margin to 23-8 at the end of the quarter.

The Wolves’ first six points of the game came from the free throw line, and they didn’t hit a field goal until Risen Johnson scored at the first-quarter buzzer.

Coupeville, with 12 points from Wiley Hesselgrave, outscored the Cowboys 16-15 in the second quarter.

At one point, the Wolves trailed 36-12 but went on a 12-2 run in the last 1:14 to cut the lead to 38-24 at the break.

Chimacum put the game away with a big second half, starting with a 27-point third quarter. Brandon Naylor led the push with 17 points in the period, and the Cowboys led 65-38 going into the fourth quarter.

Hesselgrave paced Coupeville with 18 points, all in the first three periods. Johnson finished with 10 points; Joel Walstad, Aaron Trumbull and Aaron Curtin had six each; and Matt Shank and Gabe Wynn had four.

DeAndre Mitchell, who made his varsity debut in the fourth quarter, scored on a buzzer beater; he also had three rebounds and a steal.

Curtin had eight rebounds, C.J. Smith five and Matt Shank four.

Naylor led Chimacum with 31 points.

Coupeville coach Anthony Smith said he was disappointed in “more ways than one” with the outcome.

“Don’t get me wrong, Chimacum is disciplined,” he said, “but we turned them over at times and didn’t take advantage.”

The Wolves (0-3, 4-9) will be shorthanded when they host Port Townsend (1-2, 1-11) at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23.

Trumbull and Wynn both suffered ankle injuries against Chimacum; Trumbull is questionable and Wynn is out. Jared Helmstadter re-injured his knee and may miss the game.
