A 35-year-old Oak Harbor man was recently sentenced to jail and electronic home detention for assaulting and threatening to kill a woman, court documents state.

Lionel Peoples, Jr., pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court Aug. 10 to harassment (threats to kill) and fourth-degree assault.

As part of the plea bargain, the prosecution and defense recommended that Peoples receive 90 days in jail, with 30 of those days converted to electronic home detention. Judge Vickie Churchill agreed with the recommendation and imposed the sentence, including $1,317 in fines and fees.

Officer Jennifer Rutledge with the Oak Harbor Police Department responded to a 911 report June 7 from a trailer home on N. Oak Harbor Road. Witnesses said Peoples had threatened to hit a woman in the face with a bottle and to shoot her with a 30/30 rifle. In addition, he pushed her against the trailer, causing bruises on her arm.

Witnesses said Peoples was intoxicated. A couple of men said “they had to restrain Peoples from going after” the woman again, Rutledge wrote.
