Deer more a nuisance than cute attraction | Letter

Editor,

In reference to your front page article on June 16, I have a differing opinion of our “cute little bugger” and its family.

We live on a hundred by hundred foot lot on the west side of Coupeville and have seen the above-referenced critter and its accompanying relatives in our yard recently. In fact we often have up to six deer sitting on our lawn or grazing on our meager flower and vegetable beds.

Not only are they annoying and overrunning this island, they are a real hazard. I understand that there are well over 300 accidents a year in Island County involving deer.

I think it is time the county commissioners formulate a plan to severely reduce the deer population.

They may “warm one’s heart” when they are bounding across your lawn, but they can stop one’s heart when colliding with your car. When we moved here in 1970, we were told that it was not “if” you were going to have your deer accident but “when.” We had ours about 15 years ago, when our car was totaled. I hope you are spared the same experience.
